Abstract. The overarching goal of the cruise was to investigate the biology and biogeochemistry of the central Black Sea with special consideration of the processes at the pelagic redoxcline. Water samples were collected with free-flow niskin bottles connected to a CTD rosette. Samples for the assessment of the metatranscriptome were fixed in situ and ribosomal RNA was depleted before sequencing. Metagenome and -transcriptome reads were generated with Illumina HiSeq 2500. Community composition was derived from the V3-V4 fragment of the 16S rDNA and 16S rRNA gene sequence of the same sample. DNA and RNA were extracted using AllPrep DNA/RNA Kit from QIAGEN (Hilden, Germany). Samples for DNA sequencing where stored and samples for RNA sequencing were reverse transcribed with Multiscribe RT (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA) after DNase treatment with TURBO-DNA-free Kit (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA). Sequencing was done with SciLifeLab (Metagenome; Illumina HiSeq 2500; Stockholm, Schweden), Fasteris (Metatranscriptome, Illumina HiSeq 2500, Plain-Les-Ouates, Switzerland), LGC Genomics (Amplicon sequencing, Illumina MiSeq V3, Berlin, Germany). This data set includes the assembled contigs from the metagenomic data and their annotation.
